The Explorer is the second largest of Ford’s 3 available SUV models. It comes in 3 models: the base Explorer, the XLT and the Limited. Each model comes with a 3.5L, 24 valve, V6 Ti-VCT, 290 horsepower (hp) engine, capable of producing 255 pound-feet (lb.-ft.) of torque. Each model comes in base front wheel drive (FWD), with 6-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission, and the ability to upgrade to four wheel drive (4WD). An EcoBoost engine is available as alternative for each model type. The EcoBoost engine is a 2.0L, 16 valve, 4-cylinder engine, with less horsepower, at 240 hp, but capable of producing more torque 270 pound feet (lb.-ft.). The transmission for the EcoBoost is also a 5-speed automatic, but does not include SelectShift. Other differences between the available models are based on available and standard options. For instance, only the XLT and Limited models come with standard front dual zone air conditioning, and turn signal indicator mirrors. Feature highlights for the Explorer include trailer sway control, LED tail lamps, and available BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) for blind-spot traffic alerts.
